Coverage

Camera, Action, Edit.

This week we did workshops on the use of camera and coverage, and Adobe Premier Pro.

Camera

We went over how to use the cameras for coverage of a scene and had a trial and error practice session with them so we have a chance to get used to using them when it comes to actually filming our projects. Our first session was to make a short production based on 'The Chair', which could be any interpretation we wanted, it just had to be a scene with someone sitting in a chair. This video is what I came up with as it was simple but had a basic plot to it. We had to focus on coverage; getting different angles in order to give us more options when it came to editing so that we could create more of a dynamic story. It keeps the viewers eye moving around the screen and keeps it interesting, however too many movements or cuts can be confusing and hard to keep up with.

Positives

I was happy with the plot that I came up with for this as it was easy to film and plan out in such a short space of time. I was also happy with the amount of coverage I managed to get for it which gave me a good amount of options when I edited it together.

Negatives

At some points in the video it's clear I could have used just one shot rather than doing different angles. The reason it's edited like this is because the clips weren't long enough to include the parts that I needed to. There is especially a time when Ebony is leaned over her knees and that is shot from the left-hand side, and then when she sits up the shot is from the right-hand side. These shots should have both been from the right-hand side to improve the continuity of the shots and follow the 180° rule.

Editing

We had a workshop on using Adobe Premier Pro and also Adobe Prelude. I haven't used Prelude before and I found it interesting to learn the basics of how to use it. I found it useful to start off projects with to get rid of any parts of the clips that couldn't be used i.e. camera shake. It wasn't very good for specific editing but I still think it would be useful if you had a large project with a short amount of time to edit with.
We then moved onto Premier Pro and I have used Premier Pro for a few years now so I didn't take a lot from it but did learn about how to check if the footage is the same resolution, which is useful to ensure the project is edited in the right format. In this time I got on with editing the Chair project. It went well and was quite easy to get done quickly because there wasn't too many clips to edit. I cut out the sound of the video because it wasn't important to this video as no speech was used. If I had had more time and resources, I would have put music or sound effects to the video to make it more interesting.

This House Has People In It (S2S Research)

This House Has People In It. This video is one of my favourite short films by YouTube channel Adult Swim. The video consists of (fiction) surveillance footage from an American family home. The shots show different angles from throughout the house and the production is edited in a format that is much like a security camera scroll- it goes from camera to camera as the scene unfolds. The parents are talking in the kitchen with the daughter lying face down on the floor. Eventually the parents turn the conversation to the daughter on the floor and try to get her up. They believed she was throwing a tantrum but soon realise she's stuck. As the family get more and more panicked she begins to sink into the floor and chaos unfolds as the cameras continue to flick between one another showing the rest of the house. Documentary: Presenters

Presenters. Presenter-led documentaries create a certain style that is easily engaging for the viewer. They have a sort of 'reference point' to focus on and that feeds them the information they need, while asking the questions they're wondering. As presenter of our group documentary, I want to know what's involved in being a presenter and why a presenter is used for some documentaries, but not others. The Role As a presenter, it's your job to, as you would expect, present the show. Using research that has been done in the pre-production the presenter is able to inform the viewer. They also interact with contributors asking questions, and essentially tell the story of the documentary. It's useful to have a presenter as it means we are likely to get more information from actuality if the presenter asks questions as it's happening. It also adds to the story as the presenter is usually on a journey to learn about the topic of the documentary- this is s

Screenwriter: Jack Thorne

Jack Thorne. Jack Thorne is a screenwriter, known most notably for This is England  and Skins , but also stage plays such as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Let The Right One In . [1] His work tends to be dark or particularly stylistic. You can see a similarity between a lot of his works, in the way characters relationships are very realistic. He seems to know his characters like they are his friends and family, and write them in a way that makes them particularly relatable and believable to the viewer. In Skins, all of the characters have a friendship that is unique to them. None of them will share the same kind of connection. This can also be said for This is England . From what I've seen in This is England '86 , this sense of unique friendships continues. Every character is different to the last, and they seem to be known in so much detail that you could guess things about them that aren't even shown. He represents real people and real situations, albeit
