Role and Responsibility

The Team.

I met a lot of people whilst working with Renegade Pictures and I was able to observe their roles and how they fulfilled them.

Renegade Pictures

Alex Cooke: CEO


Alex Cooke is the CEO of Renegade Pictures. Although I didn't work with her, I was able to research her role as CEO and what this involves. 
A CEO (Chief Executive Officer) is the highest ranking executive in a company. The role requires the person to make major corporate decisions, managing the overall operations of the company, and acting as the main point of communication between the board of directors and corporate operations. (1) In this case, this means that Alex works with the Series Directors and Ed Nissen in particular to ensure that Renegade is running smoothly. Alex also likely decides or approves budgets for different productions.

Alan Hayling: Editorial Director

Alan Hayling's role as Editorial Director means that he manages the editorial processes at Renegade. Alan will be required to ensure that all of the company's outputs (each programme) is to the standard of a Renegade Pictures production, and will give direction on what is necessary in order to make a documentary. 
I also didn't work with Alan but I saw him a lot more than I did Alex. Alan would sit with editors and watch edits and give feedback. He would be required to approve publications before they're sent for broadcasting.
Alan also would need to supervise productions from beginning to end to ensure that the production holds its direction and stays on track. (2)

Ed Nissen: Director of Production and Operations

As Director of Production and Operations, Ed is required to ensure that the company stays on track and meets goals. Ed's role is important as he directs the company to continue to improve and makes sure that all sections of production are running as they should. As well as overseeing the productions within Renegade Pictures, Ed ensures that each show is following production standards, and making sure that everyone in each team are working together to create a programme. (3)

Car SOS

Stephen 'Woody' Woodrow: Series Director

Stephen, or 'Woody' as he is known in the office, is the series director for Car SOS. Woody's role requires him to guide the Car SOS team from one end of production to the other. He tells the relevant people what jobs need to be done for the programme, and also acts as the main contact between the team and the executives at Renegade Pictures. He will oversee production of each episode of Car SOS, including bringing each episode idea to life with guiding prop design, and also giving feedback on edits of the programmes with the editors and Alan Hayling. 

Karen Kelly: Production Manager

Karen's role of Production Manager requires her to help Woody to guide the direction of the production. Karen takes Woody's directions and assigns each task to people. Karen also works closely with Harriet on the pre-production paperwork, planning and organising production schedules. She will also assess project budgets, and oversee the spending of the budget (such as how much is spent on travel, props, set, and contributor salaries).
Contributors and celebrities on the show, as well as the presenters, will also go to Karen for direction.

Harriet Smithson: Production Coordinator

As production coordinator, Harriet assists Karen with tasks such as pre-production and post production paperwork. Harriet works alongside all members of the team from beginning to end of production, taking on secretarial work during the production and organising travel and accommodation for cast and crew.
Harriet also deals with accounts and expenses, insurance, and distributing pre-production paperwork to the cast and crew. (4)

Ruben Pracas: DV Director

A DV Director is a role that sits between an AP (Associate Producer) and the Producer/Director. Ruben usually works on the Car SOS episodes as a camera operator and usually works alone on location, but for the As Live shows, he assisted the rest of the crew in the gallery on location, as well as being part of prop design in the office. He will also have been responsible for shooting the VT elements of the show. (5)

Stu Readfern: Producer

I didn't work with Stu so much, but as a producer he had an important role. He is responsible for controlling the budget, as well as hiring freelance crew and assessing and editing the script. His job requires him to ensure that the project meets financial targets, and also read, research and assess ideas for productions. (6)

Michelle Ruda: Researcher

I only worked with Michelle for one day as she had left the company. However, looking into the role as a researcher, responsibilities are varied.
When Michelle left, Harriet was required to take on her role until Karen hired a new researcher. I helped her with a few jobs that Michelle would normally have done; Harriet had to research for vehicle hire for prop transportation, as well as exporting a finished programme to National Geographic. To export the programme a lot of different files were needed, such as the Music EDL, a clean and an annotated script (with sources of each statement or quote), among others.
It is also the researcher's role to arrange contributors and other staff, including freelance crew members. (7)

Adrian Gee: Production Designer

I worked a lot with Adrian on location to build the set. Adrian's role required him to design the set, source the props, and build the set. He was responsible for sourcing and buying relevant props and tools, including the stage, the carpet, the sofas and the tables.

Documentary: Presenters

Presenters. Presenter-led documentaries create a certain style that is easily engaging for the viewer. They have a sort of 'reference point' to focus on and that feeds them the information they need, while asking the questions they're wondering. As presenter of our group documentary, I want to know what's involved in being a presenter and why a presenter is used for some documentaries, but not others. This House Has People In It. This video is one of my favourite short films by YouTube channel Adult Swim. The video consists of (fiction) surveillance footage from an American family home. The shots show different angles from throughout the house and the production is edited in a format that is much like a security camera scroll- it goes from camera to camera as the scene unfolds. The parents are talking in the kitchen with the daughter lying face down on the floor. Eventually the parents turn the conversation to the daughter on the floor and try to get her up. They believed she was throwing a tantrum but soon realise she's stuck. As the family get more and more panicked she begins to sink into the floor and chaos unfolds as the cameras continue to flick between one another showing the rest of the house. Jungle Run

Jungle Run. Jungle Run was a children's game show that aired on CITV from 1999 to 2006. Set in a jungle, contestants must complete tasks to collect monkeys that earn them time in the final round, whilst having to deal with the mischievous monkey characters that would try to sabotage their gameplay. I want to look at how the gameplay works in Jungle Run as I think it will help with the technicalities of the gameplay in Mission Control. I also want to look at how the show is timed to get a better idea of how much time the scripting should take. As an example, I am using an episode of Jungle Run from series 8. Running Order In order to better understand the programme and the rhythm to which it runs, I made a running order of the show and the duration of each section so that it's broken down and easier to take in each segment. From this, I was able to learn the lengths of sections such as the graphics and 'transition sequences'- montages of the group members
