LUNCH.
The Plot
Lunch follows Connor an office worker who's house has recently been broken into. He discovers what happened through his dreams, and confronts the person he believes was the intruder.
What Worked
After I had developed my script into something I wanted to create, it flowed a lot better than my first one I had written. Once I had gotten to filming it was useful that I had completed all of my preproduction as when acting on some other films, some hadn't completed it all and it was sometimes difficult to know what was coming next. The second day went particularly well and I got more than I even planned to (I had planned coverage) which ended up being really useful in editing.
When it came to post-production I was surprised to find that I only really wanted to do re-shoots for small reasons, as I was used to needing to do a lot of re-shoots when filming in college. Maybe after the coverage lesson that's somewhere I've really improved on.
I also learned about the 30° rule which improved my shot choices and avoided jump cuts.I colour graded the footage in post production and I was happy with how they turned out, despite it being my second time colour grading. I used the colours hinting to the mood I was trying to instill.
What Didn't
My first script I wrote was not very well written and didn't fit well at all into the 10 page limit. It needed more detail but if i included any more detail it was too bulked out with things that didn't matter.
My first day of filming did go better than I thought it had, but at the time it felt like I hadn't got enough done and it was hard to keep some people on the set focused, especially when some people didn't really have much to do in certain scenes they would get distracted and then distract the people I was working with. However, when reviewing the footage I got enough to tell the story, I just should have been more thorough on that day.
I didn't find much hard in the post-production, except for the editing of the sound with Fergus showed me a quick fix, but I would like to learn more on that subject because I don't have much experience with sound editing, just video editing (as I usually just have a soundtrack in the background)
What did I learn and take from this?
I learnt that I need to be more prepared with a story and go for more simple plot lines rather than making it too complicated and too big of a story. The more simple ideas work better even if there is a lot happening in them. I also need to make sure I'm reviewing my work more often so I know if I'm on track or not, and continue to be thorough with my shot lists. I also need to give myself more time to film as I did worry about the sun setting both nights as I filmed in the afternoon.
What could I develop?
I want to work further on my colour grading to improve it to ensure it flows well enough together and hone my skills in editing. I also need to work on my script writing and story planning as that could have gone better to make the whole of the production more streamlined.
